April is for Diamonds

by
April is for Diamonds The birthstone for April is the diamond, considered by some to be the gem among gems. The word diamond is derived from the Greek word “adamas,” which means “invincible.” Considering the fact that diamonds are one of the hardest substances on earth, this is the perfect name.

Diamonds have its origins in India. Alexander the Great was the first recorded man from Western Civilization to bring the diamond to Ancient Greek attention, obtained during one of his many travels.

However, because diamonds were so hard to obtain, this gem of gems would not become popular in the West until thousands of years later, in the Middle Ages, when trade between the two cultures allowed for a reliable supply.

Some texts in the Middle Ages espoused on the benefits of wearing diamonds. Those wearing diamond rings were guarded from nightmares. Those who wore diamond necklaces were cured of any heart trouble.

Wearing diamond jewelry was also thought to increase the wearer's intellect and ensure victory in battle.

Today, while we don't associate diamonds with these benefits, we do associated diamonds with longevity, and diamond jewelry is an appropriate gift for any close family member or friend in order to celebrate and strengthen the relationship's longevity, whether the one receiving the gift has a birthday in April or not.
