Insure the jewelry you actually wear

What it costs
Jewelers Mutual states that insuring jewelry through them typically runs about one to two percent of the value of the piece per year. Where you live is one of the factors that affects the rate, and a zero deductible option is available. A ring in the range most of our customers buy usually comes out to a few dollars a month.
As a rule of thumb, a standalone policy is worth considering if a piece is valued around fifteen hundred dollars or more, means something to you, or would be genuinely hard to replace out of pocket.
Why not just use homeowners insurance
Home and renters policies often include some jewelry coverage, but the limits tend to be low and the deductible tends to be high, which can leave you paying most of the loss yourself. Damage, disappearance, natural disasters, and worldwide travel are not always covered.
There is one more thing worth knowing. Filing a jewelry claim on your homeowners policy can raise your premium or put the policy itself at risk. A separate jewelry policy keeps a lost earring from turning into a problem with the insurance on your house.
How to get covered
- Check your rate. It takes a few minutes online. You tell them what you have and where you live.
- Gather your paperwork. An appraisal is not always required to apply, but having one on file makes a claim much easier later. We can appraise your diamond jewelry here in the store.
- Apply. You can cover as many pieces as you like. Applications go through an underwriting review.
- Pay your premium. Once you are approved, your first year of coverage begins.
- Wear your jewelry. If something does happen, you file a claim and the repair or replacement can be handled through the jeweler you choose. We are glad to be that jeweler.
Get an appraisal first
A policy is only as accurate as the value behind it. Metal and stone prices move, so jewelry that was appraised years ago is often insured for less than it would cost to replace today. Jewelers Mutual suggests having pieces appraised about every two years.
